In 1949, the Women’s Club of the University issued “A Faculty for Cooking” drawing recipes from faculty and staff including Harriet Seelye Rhees; professors Dexter Perkins (History), Kathrine Koller (History), J. Edward Hoffmeister (Geology), Brian O’Brien (Optics), Robert E. Marshak (Physics), and Margaret Denny (English), and not surprisingly, the spouses of many faculty. It was edited by Katherine Wagenblass, an accomplished cook who became a noted Rochester caterer after the death of her husband, Professor John H. Wagenblass (English) in 1949. Not to be outdone, the School of Medicine and Dentistry also issued several cookbooks, including “Just What the Doctor Ordered” (1960). The Women’s Council of the Memorial Art Gallery compiled “Artists in the Kitchen” (1960), and the summer Carillon Series, with its highly competitive picnics on the Eastman Quadrangle led to two Carillon Cookbooks in 1982 and 1983.
