"Safer sex...Condoms help protect you and your partner from STD and AIDS. 1. Buy latex condoms. Check the expiry date on the box. Open condom package carefully to avoid tearing. 2. Either partner can put the condom on the penis before any genital contact. Pinch air from the tip of the condom to leave space for the sperm. Air left in the condom tip will cause it to burst. 3. Unroll the condom right down to the base of the erect penis. 4. Use a water-based lubricant such as K-Y or Lubafax jelly to increase sensation and to prevent tearing of condom. Do not use oil-based lubricants such as Vaseline which can cause the rubber to break down. For extra protection, use a spermicide with nonoxynol 9 such as Delfen or Ramses. 5. After the man comes, pull out the penis while it is still hard, holding firmly the base of the condom. Then remove it, being careful not to spill sperm. Throw it away into the garbage. Use condoms only once. Heat and friction can damage condoms. Keep them in a purse, shirt or jacket pocket. Produced by the DSC at the Montreal General Hospital. Graphics: Lucie Brunel"
